5th Puzzle Answer

If we accept that the GPS navigation equipment is working reliably, and since he is now on a continent where bears do not exist, then he must be near the South Pole, 15 km North of a parallel which has a circumference exactly 15 km (or a sub-multiple such as 7.5 km or 5km etc...) in circumference. From any point 15 km North of such a parallel, travelling South will take you to the 15 km circumference parallel, travelling West for 15 km will cause you to go full circle around the South Pole, and travelling North 15 km will bring you back to the starting point. The bird must have been an emperor penguin although, of course, they are not near the pole, only the coastal regions in Antartica.
